Interesting Numismatics Collection Themes

Start collecting Today

If you’re just starting out collecting numismatic coins or you’re considering expanding or starting on a new collection, theme should be something you consider with care.

There are many different ways to collect coins around a unifying element or theme. The theme of numismatics collections is what guides collectors’ decisions about which coins to go after based on their goals.

Collecting by country is a popular approach taken by many coin enthusiasts. This involves focusing on coins from your own or another country of interest. Since coins’ historical significance is usually of interest to collectors, focusing on a country whose history you’re familiar or enthused about is a good choice. An interesting twist on collecting by country is to aim to collect one specimen from every country.

You may also choose to collect coins based on metallurgical composition. You could choose to collect coins made of copper, gold or silver, or only coins that contain two metals. A coin’s metallurgical content may be closely tied to historical events of interest, such that it’s possible to collect coins with a major theme that includes a minor theme, as well.

Numismatics collections may be based on type, variety or year. These are three more popular ways to assemble themed collections that will include goals that can serve as guidelines as to what coins to seek out and include. Mintmark collections are yet another possibility you may find appealing.

Collections that include genuine numismatic coins as well as copies are a fun alternative way to collect. The copies included may be coins minted at the same time as the authentic coin, but by another ruler or governing body. Copies that were deliberately minted to serve as counterfeits may be another type of coin included in this sort of collection. Even modern copies created and sold as replicas may be interesting additions to a copy numismatics collection.

You can be as creative or as traditional as you like in choosing how you assemble your own coin collection. Other coin collectors, coin dealers, numismatics clubs and even Internet forums could provide you with ideas about how to collect.

You could also simply start researching coins that capture your interest, then look for a common theme that reflects the reason why you find these coins interesting. A non-traditional, yet coherently themed collection may one day be of great interest to a buyer simply because of its uniqueness.
