Being Sensible with Rare Coins

Protect your investment

Rare coins can be worth a lot of money. In some cases, investors buy them but don’t care for them or protect them properly. They may also end up buying something other than a rare coin due to not having had it checked out properly before the purchase. This can be avoided by using resources that everyone has access to. Being smart about coin investing starts with learning about numismatics and ends with taking care of the product or products you choose to buy.

Imagine you’ve gotten your first shipment of rare coins. If they’re fairly common coins, they’ll probably be in a roll, as would any other coinage. However, if you have rare coinage on your hands, they will most likely be in what’s called a slab. This is a sealed container used to hold coins that have a high value. On the top of the slab, you should find tags that trace back to a numismatic service. These services grade coins for their clients but, more importantly, they authenticate coins. Before this service became widely available, there was fraud on the markets that made them dangerous to the inexperienced. This has been largely eliminated.

Rare coins will show their age in many different ways. Gold is the least dramatic in this regard. Gold never tarnishes, so a gold coin is generally always shiny and rather new looking, save for any physical damage the coin may have suffered over time. Silver coins will tarnish—collectors call it “toning”—which eventually gives them a black color. This doesn’t hurt the coin and it doesn’t affect its value. The only way it will affect the value is if you clean the toning off, in which case you’ll have essentially destroyed the collector’s value of the coin altogether.

Remember that rare coins are prized by everyone, including thieves. You need a safe to store these, if you choose to keep them in your home. The most expensive coins are usually kept in safe deposit boxes. It does eliminate the fun of looking at your investment but, in reality, the less handling the coin is subjected to and the more controlled the environment it’s kept in, the better for your investment purposes. Remember that any rare coin is potentially very valuable and that you should take measures to protect it from all types of harm, environmental and otherwise.
