Are you interested in the history of precious metals? Who doesn’t love to own his/her own collection of gold coins or silver bars? These precious elements are a great investment today, as well as a fun pastime. You may wonder though, where did the love of these metals start?
The love of shiny things dates back to before man’s written history. Our ancestors of prehistoric times were believed to be in love with gold, just as much as we are today. Even the Egyptians and kings from the B.C. era had a love of glittering metals. Whatever it is about gold and silver, man can’t seem to get enough of its luster.
Some people believe that the Lydians may have created the earliest form of coins. Others believe that coin making started in ancient Greece. Archaeological experts say that the Indians were actually the first to create coins. Still others say coins made from metals began in China in 900 B.C. There is plenty of debate over this topic, but somewhere in history, man’s love of precious metals moved him to make them a traded commodity for goods.
Gold has certainly had a huge impact on many people’s lives throughout history. There were the gold rushes in the United States, which really helped to tame the Wild West. The rest of the world had its fair share of rushes as well, especially in places like the Yukon, Brazil and South Africa. Don’t think for a minute that gold rushes are a thing of the past! In 2001, there was quite the rush in Mongolia, and as recently as 2006, Brazil saw upwards of 500,000 people looking for gold in the Amazonas.
Today, precious metals are used in nearly every aspect of man’s life. From your fancy silver dinnerware, to the palladium in your car that keeps your emissions down, and even to that wedding band you wear on your finger. A great deal of the comforts of life today are brought about by the good use of these metals. Some people even make a living buying, selling, and investing in things such as gold, silver, platinum and palladium. You can collect metal in the forms of bars, coinage and ingots.
The history of man’s love for metals is a long one. From prehistoric times and certainly into the future, precious metals will always be close to the hearts of men and women on this planet.
